How to prevent frozen pipes or burst pipes this winter

December 6th, 2012

The other day we noticed that some of the news headlines were promising the coldest winter in 100 years and as of this morning, it seems that we are just at the very beginning of this cold, pre-Christmas, spell. A frozen ground often means frozen pipes and time to call out IQ Plumbing services or to check here on our blog or website for the latest tips and tricks on how to prevent or deal with frozen pipes, burst pipes, seasonal flood clearance, overflowing drains and any other plumbing emergency you find yourself ensconced inwww.iqplumbers.co.uk .

Imagine it is 7am and you wonder into the kitchen to make that first all important cup of coffee, you turn on the hot water tap to run the water for the washing up, nothing happens. Must just be the hot water pipe. You turn the cold tap to fill the kettle, nothing happens. Panic sets in. Not only have you got many important places to go and meetings to have, but there is no hot or cold water, for either washing or for coffee. There is no time like the present to call IQ Plumbers, your local emergency plumbing specialists in the London area.

We turn up and tell you that your pipes are frozen, we defrost them and then we explain to you how you can prevent this from occurring in the future because we know that you don’t want to have to be calling us out every time it happens, however much we would like to respond to your call.

Here at IQ Plumbers we are very busy during the winter months with emergencies such as frozen pipesburst pipes and flood clearance. When your pipes burst, whether inside or outside, it can cause an enormous amount of destruction and unhappiness for everyone concerned. At it’s worst, the pipes can burst with boiling hot water in them, going from apartment to apartment, causing nothing but carnage and sometimes injuries. It could mean a quick mop and a bucket, though more likely an attic or basement flood that will need expert drainage and flood clearance tools and pumps to resolve the problem. Whether we are talking a plumbing, heatingflooding or drainage emergency, prevention is always the best cure.

So, here are a few tips and tricks to prevent emergency plumbing being needed in your home this winter. We have taken these from the CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating engineer’s website)  http://www.ciphe.org.uk/Consumers/Top-Tips/ as quite frankly, we could not have put it better ourselves.

  • Find out where your stop valve is located on the incoming water supply main and label it. Check occasionally that it is working. IQ plumbing services can help you with this.
  • Whilst you are looking find where other service valves are located? Label them and check from time to time that they are working correctly. IQ plumbing services can help you with this
  • Find the location of any drain valves on the system too. These can be used in an emergency to empty your water and central heating systems (once the source of heat has been put out). IQ plumbing services can help you with this.
  • Ensure that the storage system and exposed pipes are properly insulated, particularly in the roof space or attic. IQ plumbing services can help you with this.
  • In very cold weather take special care to prevent water pipes becoming frozen. If you have a storage cistern in the roof space, it’s a good idea to leave the hatch open. Heat from the house will help to keep the cistern and pipes from freezing.
  • Inspect your cold water storage cistern (tank) regularly and, if it is metal, make sure it is not corroding. IQ plumbing services can help you with this
  • Check the condition of flexible hosepipes to plumbed-in domestic appliances at regular  intervals.
  • Dripping taps or continuously running overflow pipes are a sure sign that your plumbing system requires maintenance.
  • Have central heating boilers and other heating appliances serviced yearly. IQ plumbing services can help you with this.
  • If you have a condensing boiler, make sure that the condensate pipework is protected against freezing.
  • If you need help with any of the above please call IQ Plumbing Services on 0800 917 1554 to make an appointment or if in case of an emergency ring us on our mobile number 07715 282 998. With IQ plumbers the customer always comes first. We say it all the time, but it is true, we have no hidden fees or call out charges. We are upfront and transparent in our work and our fees. Always Keep Your Water Pipes Lagged

    February 2nd, 2010

Emergency plumbers in London are being kept busy particularly in the winter months not just from blocked drains and frozen pipes but also from flooding which has started to affect various places in the UK.

Whilst it is has proven difficult to prevent flooding in certain areas of the country it is far easier to protect your household pipes from freezing up.

One of the most efficient ways of preventing bursting and frozen pipes in your home is by lagging your pipes both inside and outside of your home. Many people will remember to lag their pipes outside their property, however, often forget to protect the pipes in their loft.

Even with the insulation in your loft it can be just as cold in this area as it is outside and therefore, your pipes are very susceptible to freezing and bursting just as much as they are outside.

If you get a burst pipe it can mean hefty repair bills and a fast call to emergency plumbers it is also very dangerous. Most home owners will not notice a burst pipe until they hear the sounds of dripping water and it can cause your fuses to blow.

Not only does a burst pipe in your London property mean a call-out to emergency plumbers in London, but it can also cause serious electrical accidents and in some cases serious injury to the occupiers.

At IQ Plumbing Services we have professional trained emergency plumbers who can deal with any type of plumbing problem quickly and efficiently.

    Repairing Water Pipe Leaks

    January 21st, 2010

The majority of plumbing problems will occur near fixtures such as toilets and sinks, however, sometimes the water pipes themselves can turn out to be the root of the problem. Water pipes are temperamental objects which are prone to sweating, freezing, leaking and making loud noises.

Whilst there is always a professional emergency drainage company or emergency plumbers on hand to deal with blocked drains or plumbing problems it will also save you time and money if you check whether your leak is coming from a joint first.

If the leak is coming from a joint which you have already located then the obvious thing to do is to tighten that joint – this is easy.

If, however, the leak is located inside a water pipe then the leaking section needs removing and replacing with a new pipe section. This is not always easy to do though particularly in the case of threaded galvanized steel pipes which will tighten at one end of the pipe automatically as you attempt to unscrew a section at the opposite end. Copper piping requires new sections of pipe to be sweat-soldered into place

When it comes to sections of water pipe being replaced it is always a job that is best left to a professional plumber to avoid any huge problems.

Our team of emergency plumbers at IQ Plumbing Services are trained to the highest degree and we can provide a large amount of emergency plumbers in London so there is always one on hand to come to you quickly.

Knowing Where Your Water Stop Valve Is

    January 20th, 2010

Your home’s plumbing system will certainly be composed of two completely separate subsystems.

One of these subsystems will bring freshwater into your home and the other will take the waste water out.

Any water that comes into your home will be pressured to enable it to travel around your home such as to your bathroom upstairs and around corners. When this pressured water passes into the house, it will also run through a water meter which will register the amount of water that you have used.

Generally, the main water valve to shut down the supply will be located close to your water meter. If you find yourself in a position where you need to contact emergency plumbers because of an urgent plumbing problem you must also quickly turn the main water valve off even before your emergency plumbers arrive. If you don’t shut down your water supply after a pipe bursts, for example, it is likely to completely flood your home quite quickly.

Should your plumbing emergency be confined to a toilet or sink it won’t be necessary to turn off your water supply completely and you will be able to in most circumstances just turn the water off at the stop valve which is used for that particular fixture.

When it comes to emergency plumbers in London, we have a professional team of emergency plumbers at IQ Plumbing Services who are highly trained to deal with any plumbing emergencies quickly- including blocked drains, burst pipes and another similar other issues.
